We did not inherit the earth from our parents,
We are borrowing it from our children.
- Native American Proverb
In 1990 Shimano Canada became the first company in the North American fishing tackle industry to create a long term comprehensive advocacy program with the Shimano Sport Fisheries Initiative (SSFI). Within a year, SSFI was introduced in the United States when Shimano American Corporation became the first company to sign a formal Memorandum of Understanding on behalf of recreational fishing efforts with the U.S. Department of Interior, Bureau of Land Management.
In association with the scientific community, conservation organizations, government agencies and fishing tackle retailers, SSFI finances wholly or in part, efforts which directly benefit sport fishing. Since 1990 Shimano has been a leader in fishery habitat improvement, scientific research, programs for young anglers, innovations in catch and release fish handling to reduce mortality, government affairs efforts to maintain access to places to fish in salt and fresh water, and angler education programs.
At Shimano, we believe it is our responsibility to give something back to the natural resources on which our business is based, as well as to our customers who share our commitment to conservation and environmental stewardship. Since 1990 we have been acting on this philosophy. We invite you to have a look at what we have been doing.
